There was a church on this site in the eleventh century. It was rebuilt in 1298 and the existing church, sponsored by the university, dates from 1478. For centuries Great St Mary's was used by the University for religious, achedemic and public functions. It was closely associated with the Reformation. Erasmus, Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley preached here. Bucer was buried in the church in 1551 but his corpse was exhumed and publicly burnt outside in Mary's reign. It is said that Oliver Cromwell had the Book of Common Prayer destroyed here in his presence. Although still used for University services Great St Mary's is also a Parish Church. The Mayor and corporation have come here for civic services for many centuries.

This chapel was built in the early 12th century as part of the nearby Leper Hospital. In 1211 King John granted a fair, to be held on the feast of the Holy Cross, on Stourbridge Common, to support the work of the hospital. It becames the largest medieval fair in Europe and some of the streets nearby still bear the original names.

The Chapel gradually fell in to disrepair but was restored in the mid 19th Century. The Chapel is now owned by the Cambridge Preservation society. Regular worship is still carried out at the chapel. the chapel is also used as a place of prayer and retreat.

St Micheal and Harvey De Stanton Chapel
Trinity Street, Cambridge

Closed so no services

This ancient church is unique in England. It is used both as a College Chapel and a parish Church. Originally built before 1200 it was redisigned in 1326 by Harvey de Stanton, Chancellor to Edward to provide a place of worship for Michaelhouse, the college which he founded. This accounts for the large nave, the prototype of college chapels. At one time members of Gonville Hall also worshipped here and Trinity College became patron when in 1546 Michealhouse was dissolved. In 1557 St Micheal's was put under an interdict because it contained the remians of the reformer Paul Fagius and the church was reconsecrated. In the nineteenth century it was restored after the roof had caught fire. The parish was later united with Great Saint Mary's.

In 1966 the church was transformed. The nave has become St Michael's Hall. St Michaels Chapel (the old chancel) and Harvey de Stanton Chapel are approached from the south side through the old churchyard, now St Michaels Court of Gonville and Caius College.
